Nepal Health News, Kathmandu: The Nepal Medical Association has demanded the convening of the 18th meeting of the Medical Education Commission. The 17th meeting had decided to increase the number of postgraduate seats in public institutions and to hold further discussions and make necessary decisions on other issues raised by stakeholders. However, since no initiative has been taken to resolve these issues, the association has called for the 18th meeting, according to General Secretary Dr. Sanjeev Tiwari.
The association has demanded that resident doctors studying at the postgraduate level should immediately receive retirement benefits equivalent to the eighth-level government medical officer. It has also called for the immediate initiation of the matching process, incorporating the additional seats approved in the 17th meeting into the seat matrix published by the commission, ensuring that PG seats are not reduced in the future.
The association has warned that if their demands are not addressed within 72 hours, they will be forced to call all doctors to a phased protest movement.
Although the 16th meeting of the commission had decided to provide retirement benefits equal to that of an eighth-level government medical officer to all resident doctors, the decision has not yet been implemented.
For a long time, resident doctors studying in various private medical colleges, along with MD/MS/MDS postgraduate students and other examinees, have been engaged in a protest movement.
