Nepal’s Domestic Pharma Industry Surges: Rs. 35 Billion Sales in a Year

Nepal Health News, Kathmandu – Eleven Nepali pharmaceutical companies recorded medicine sales exceeding Rs. 1 billion in the fiscal year 2080/81 (2023/24). The Association of Pharmaceutical Producers of Nepal (APPON) released this data, highlighting the impressive performance of domestic companies. Among these, five companies had turnovers exceeding Rs. 2.5 billion.

At the event organized to publicize the sales data for fiscal year 2080/81, former APPON president and former vice president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Umesh Lal Shrestha, stated that the Nepali pharmaceutical industry achieved sales worth Rs. 35.2 billion within a year.

APPON vice president Santosh Baral mentioned that Nepali industries saw a 20% growth compared to the previous fiscal year. He noted strong participation from new companies. According to him, new pharmaceutical companies recorded a sales growth of around 17%, while older companies saw about 9% growth. This data includes 76 APPON member industries and 67 companies actively marketing their products.

While sales in the fiscal year 2079/80 (2022/23) stood at Rs. 29.36 billion, it rose to Rs. 35.2 billion in 2080/81—reflecting a growth of 19.89%.

Out of the 67 pharmaceutical companies, annual turnover ranged from Rs. 60 million to Rs. 3.5 billion.

Around 70%, or 45 companies, recorded sales of less than Rs. 150 million.
