Nepal Health News, Rupandehi – Lumbini Province Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya has expressed concern over the growing impact of non-communicable diseases like cancer, calling it alarming for human life. He emphasized that the government prioritizes effective treatment of such conditions.
While laying the foundation stone of Sumitra Memorial Cancer Hospital in Bethari, Mayadevi Rural Municipality–6, on Wednesday, Chief Minister Acharya stated that programs supporting cancer patients' treatment are being continuously operated.
Having personally battled cancer himself, the Chief Minister shared his emotional experience with the disease and affirmed that the provincial government is working in favor of patients.
The hospital is being constructed on an area of 2 bighas and 5 kathhas (roughly 1.8 hectares), with a total budget of NPR 1.5 billion. It will have a capacity of 100 beds and is targeted for completion within one and a half years, according to founder Arjun Paudel.
He noted that it is difficult to ensure access to treatment for all through government efforts alone, and therefore, initiatives from the private sector should be welcomed positively.
The hospital's construction has been initiated through joint investment by Nepali cancer specialists working abroad, Nepali entrepreneurs, individuals who have lost family members to cancer, cancer survivors, and other businesspeople.
