23rd Anniversary of NAMS: 3,600 Specialists Produced

Nepal Health News, Kathmandu – The National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) celebrated its 23rd anniversary on Tuesday through various programs. On the occasion, Prof. Dr. Dilip Sharma, Director of Bir Hospital, shared that over 635,000 patients received services from the hospital's outpatient department in the past year. More than 36,000 people received emergency services, and approximately 21,000 patients were admitted for treatment, according to hospital statistics.

Over 22,000 surgeries were performed at Bir Hospital during the year, including 5,000 major surgeries, Dr. Sharma stated. Additionally, around 86,000 X-rays, 18,000 CT scans, more than 8,000 MRIs, and over 63,000 ultrasound tests were conducted during this period. Currently, the hospital has 966 beds, including 72 ICU and 38 HDU beds.

According to NAMS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bhupendra Basnet, the institution has so far produced around 3,600 specialists in MD/MS and nursing programs. Of the 400 students who study MD/MS annually on scholarships, the majority are enrolled at NAMS.

At present, NAMS is running academic programs in collaboration with 24 hospitals and offers DM programs in 10 subjects and MCh programs in 6 subjects. This year, the number of postgraduate seats has increased from 107 to 244. NAMS continues to expand its academic and service-oriented programs in collaboration with key hospitals such as Bir, Kanti, Paropakar, Gangalal, Patan, and Tripureshwor Eye Hospital.
