Rise in COVID infections among returnees from India; shortage of test kits at Sudurpashchim border points

Nepal Health News, Kanchanpur: COVID-19 infections have once again been detected among Nepalis returning from India through various border points in Sudurpashchim Province. According to the Health Directorate, 16 cases have been confirmed just in the past week. Most of those entering through the Trinagar border in Kailali and the Jhulaghat border in Baitadi have shown symptoms. However, due to a shortage of testing kits, not everyone could be tested.

Two cases were detected on Tuesday at the Gauriphanta and Jhulaghat border points. On the same day, 643 individuals entered Nepal, but only 14 were tested. Although testing has begun at the Gaddachauki border, the number of kits available there is also limited. The District Health Office in Kanchanpur has started testing but currently has only 100 kits, so only symptomatic individuals are being tested.

Health workers at health desks are assessing travelers’ health, providing necessary consultations, and advising suspected cases to isolate at home. However, many travelers are entering the country directly through the border without any monitoring by security personnel. Locals have demanded stricter enforcement at the borders and mandatory health screening for all entrants
