A New Era in Public Rehabilitation Services: State-of-the-Art National Neurosciences Center to Be Established

Nepal Health News, Kathmandu: Minister for Health and Population, Pradeep Poudel, has announced the establishment of a well-equipped National Neurosciences Center in the upcoming fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26). Responding to a query raised by lawmaker Jagaprasad Sharma in the National Assembly, Minister Poudel informed that the budget has already been allocated for the center.

The center, to be established under the approved policies and programs, will also include a special rehabilitation unit, clarified Minister Poudel. He emphasized that such services would be extremely beneficial in helping citizens suffering from chronic diseases, disabilities, and mental health issues reintegrate into normal life.

Making Rehabilitation Services Accessible Everywhere

According to Minister Poudel, rehabilitation centers currently operated by the private sector are limited to major cities. He stated that the government is working to make these services accessible to all people across various regions by increasing resources, infrastructure, and human resources.

As rehabilitation services are directly linked with long-term and clinical healthcare systems, coordination among different departments, divisions, and ministries is essential, added Minister Poudel.

Preparation Underway for Rehabilitation and Counseling Centers in All Seven Provinces

At present, rehabilitation services are being provided through the Leprosy and Disability Management Section under the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division of the Department of Health Services. Additionally, Minister Poudel shared that standards have already been set for establishing rehabilitation and counseling centers for individuals with physical and mental disabilities and citizens affected by chronic illnesses in all seven provinces.

Model Center and Strategy Being Developed

Currently, 23 federal hospitals and 36 provincial and district hospitals are providing physiotherapy services. A draft of the National Rehabilitation Strategy, currently being prepared by the government, includes a target to establish at least one model rehabilitation center at the federal level.
