70 percent of Nepali married couples experience sexual dysfunction

Nepal Health News, Kathmandu – A recent study has revealed that nearly 70 percent of married couples in Nepal are experiencing sexual dysfunction. Conducted in 2024 through the collaboration of Solid Nepal, Local Integrated Society Nepal, the Family Welfare Division, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the research emphasizes the urgent need to prioritize sexual health.

The study covered all three geographical regions of the country and included 3,382 married couples from 34 districts. According to the findings, 72.2 percent of those experiencing sexual dysfunction are men, while 32 percent are women.

Dr. Khem Karki, the coordinator of the study, stated that this issue has led to various forms of tension and violence within families. Increasing sexual dissatisfaction in marital relationships has contributed to conflicts, divorces, sexual abuse, and domestic violence, he explained.

Mental stress, unhealthy lifestyles, and the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases have been identified as the primary causes behind the issue. The study recommends formulating policies that incorporate sexual health and developing an integrated treatment system at the governmental level.

It also highlights that healthy diets, open communication, and timely treatment are key to improving sexual health and urges awareness from the general public to policymakers alike
