Manmohan is developing: a virus as an alternative to antibiotics

Nepal Health News, Biratnagar – Manmohan Technical University, located in Budhiganga–4 of Morang district, has set a goal to advance technical education, scientific research, and production in a unified manner. The university has put forward plans ranging from the development of Ayurvedic products to scientific studies aimed at finding solutions against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

According to Vice Chancellor Dr. Subhashree Pokharel, the university has already developed Ayurvedic products such as Sancho, Vicks, and balm oil, which are currently awaiting approval before being released to the market. She mentioned that the university is preparing to launch its own products in the market, which aligns with the “earn while you learn” model.

A New Direction in Scientific Research
The university reports that two major research projects are in their final stages:

  1. A study of viruses capable of killing antibiotic-resistant bacteria that harm the human body, and

  2. The development of a diabetes-controlling medicine based on Himalayan medicinal herbs found in Nepal.

Budget Shortage a Major Challenge
Although NPR 370 million (approx. USD 2.8 million) is needed for the current fiscal year, the provincial government has allocated only NPR 140 million. According to Dr. Pokharel, this budget is insufficient even for the construction of basic infrastructure. The budget shortfall has also affected staff salaries as well as the operation of academic and research programs.

Future Plans
The university has proposed a long-term plan to establish a 300-bed teaching hospital, 18 state-of-the-art laboratories, a planetarium, and a science museum by 2030. It is also preparing to bring the Dhankuta District Hospital under the university's jurisdiction.

Academic Programs and Commitment
Manmohan University currently runs practical academic programs in engineering, health sciences, science, and law. Programs like BBA, LLB, Criminal Law, and Hospital Management are gaining popularity. Vice Chancellor Pokharel has pledged to keep the university free from political interference and to maintain transparency and fairness in appointments
