Nepal Health News, Kathmandu – For the first time, the Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) has expanded its eye care services abroad by conducting a free eye check-up camp in Muscat, the capital of Oman, specifically targeting Nepali citizens residing there.
A team led by Dr. Pushpa Giri Shrestha, Chief Ophthalmologist of Bharatpur Eye Hospital, conducted the camp on 13th Asar at Badr Al Samaa and Al Khuwair hospitals in Muscat. The event was organized in coordination with the Nepali Embassy in Oman. In addition to eye examinations, free eyeglasses were distributed to those in need.
Bharat Bahadur Chand, General Secretary of NNJS, stated that the program was initiated with the aim of providing accessible and quality services to Nepali workers abroad. He emphasized that since eye treatment abroad is expensive, such services are crucial for Nepali migrant workers.
Following the success of the program, the Nepali Embassy in Oman announced plans to expand similar services to other cities in Oman. It is believed that the success of such initiatives will also support NNJS’s broader goal of establishing Nepal as a destination for medical tourism in the field of eye care.
According to Prof. Dr. Chet Raj Pant, Chairperson of NNJS, this overseas expansion is aligned with the organization’s vision to position Nepal internationally by demonstrating that eye care services provided in Nepal are of world-class standards.
As per Dr. Shailesh Kumar Mishra, Executive Director of NNJS, the organization examined around 900,000 patients and performed over 160,000 surgeries in 2024 alone. Since its inception, NNJS has provided services to more than 46.8 million patients and conducted over 5.3 million surgeries.
This initiative by Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh is expected not only to provide affordable and high-quality health services to the Nepali community abroad but also to contribute significantly to establishing Nepal as a global hub for eye care services
