NePal Health News, Kathmandu – Under the leadership of the Nepal Medical Association, doctors across the country have continued their ongoing protest, which included the closure of Outpatient Department (OPD) services in most hospitals on Tuesday. The doctors are protesting a recent decision by the Consumer Court, claiming it puts unnecessary pressure on medical practice.
According to the Association, the court's verdict has increased the professional risks for doctors and could negatively impact healthcare services. On Monday as well, OPD services were disrupted in major public and private hospitals across the country, leaving hundreds of patients without access to regular check-ups and consultations.
Escalating their protest, the Association has announced a large-scale demonstration at Maitighar Mandala on Wednesday. In addition, doctors have been urged to return their registration certificates to the Nepal Medical Council — a move that underscores the seriousness of the protest.
A statement released by the Association reads, "We have taken to the streets to demand respect for the dignity of the medical profession, fairness, and the safety of doctors." The Association has also called on the government for immediate dialogue.
Meanwhile, the disruption of health services has led to increased frustration and inconvenience among patients. Some patients have sought treatment elsewhere, while others have had to pay high fees at private facilities as alternatives. The Ministry of Health has yet to issue an official response.
Analysts say both the court's ruling and the doctors’ protest are sensitive issues, indicating the need for the government to take long-term policy decisions seriously.
