Nepal Health News, Kathmandu: Medical education reform activist Dr. Govinda KC has warned of launching a strong protest movement if the government does not keep the seat numbers and fees of medical colleges unchanged.
In a public statement, Dr. KC expressed serious concern over the government's and the Medical Education Commission's disregard for earlier demands not to increase the number of seats and fees. He stated, “Despite our repeated requests, reports that the commission and government are preparing to increase the number of seats in medical colleges have drawn our attention.”
Reminding the previous government as well, he said, “We once again urge that no seat numbers be increased and that the fees remain unchanged. Otherwise, we will be compelled to launch a protest movement, including a hunger strike.”
Additionally, he has called for the swift passing of legislation that includes criteria for appointing officials in medical institutions and universities, the establishment of government medical colleges in Ilam, Udayapur, and Dadeldhura, and addressing the shortage of manpower in government health institutions.
Dr. KC also stated that previous agreements have not been implemented and emphasized the need for their immediate execution. Furthermore, he has demanded the initiation of a legal process to make medical education non-profit starting from 2085 B.S. (2028 A.D.).
