Nepal Health News, Kathmandu: The All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) has criticized the government's decision to increase the number of seats only in private medical and paramedical colleges as unequal and discriminatory.
According to the ANNFSU Maharajgunj Campus Committee, the state should increase the number of seats in government medical colleges, which are accessible to economically disadvantaged but talented students, instead of prioritizing the private sector, which they say is unjust.
Against the decision taken in the 21st meeting of the Medical Education Commission, ANNFSU has put forward three main demands. These demands include investing in the physical infrastructure and quality of government medical colleges to expand seats as needed, conducting a thorough evaluation of the infrastructure and quality of any institution before increasing seats, and ending the profit-driven trend in education to ensure equal opportunities for all students.
According to ANNFSU, ensuring equal access to medical education is essential, and the state’s responsibility in this regard must be clear.
