Nepal Health News, Bhaktapur – The Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center in Bhaktapur has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing a third kidney transplant on the same individual. According to the center’s executive director, Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha, this is the first time in Nepal that such a complex and high-risk procedure has been successfully completed.
This latest transplant was performed on Laxman Kishor Chaudhary, a former minister and current member of parliament from Sudurpaschim Province.
His first kidney transplant was done in Lucknow, India, while the second (in 2015 AD) and now the third transplant were both carried out at the Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center under the leadership of Dr. Shrestha.
According to Dr. Shrestha, performing a third kidney transplant is technically very challenging due to immunological complications, risk of infection, adverse drug reactions, and the difficulty in finding a suitable donor. Because of these challenges, such procedures are rarely performed worldwide. Overcoming these hurdles and successfully completing the transplant in Nepal marks a historic achievement in the field of medicine.
Chaudhary's most recent transplant was done under the "paired exchange" system, which allows organ swapping between unrelated individuals to make transplants possible.
The center noted that the first second-time kidney transplant in Nepal was performed as early as 2010 at Bir Hospital under Dr. Shrestha's leadership, and this third transplant is an extremely rare medical accomplishment.
In its 13 years since establishment, the transplant center has successfully performed 1,502 kidney transplants and 35 liver transplants, according to the center.
