Practice on dead bodies is done so that mistakes are not made on living patients during training

Nepal Health News, Kathmandu – A one-day practical workshop was conducted at Nepal Medical College with the aim of enhancing the skills of neurosurgeons and nurses working in the operating theater. The workshop was organized to make the treatment of neurosurgical and spinal patients more effective.

Participating in the workshop, Dr. Maya Bhattchan, a neurosurgeon at Nepal Medical College, stated that anatomical practice on cadavers was conducted to minimize possible errors during surgery on live patients. According to her, such practices are extremely useful for learning techniques to preserve nerves and to make surgeries safer and more effective.

The workshop was organized under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Krishna Sharma, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the college, and saw participation from neurosurgeons and nurses working in operating rooms from various parts of the country. The college provided surgical instruments, technical support, and portable X-ray equipment for the event.

Prof. Dr. Sharma is also the founding president of the Neurosurgery Spinal Surgery Chapter. According to him, although similar workshops have been held in other locations before, this was the first of its kind at Nepal Medical College.

A total of 37 neurosurgeons and nurses participated in the workshop. The event was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Krishna Sharma, Dr. Maya Bhattchan, Dr. Suman Rijal, and Dr. Susan Shrestha.

Participants included Dr. Amit Thapa from Kathmandu Medical College, Dr. Samir Acharya from Annapurna Neuro Hospital, Dr. Nilam Khadka and Dr. Somraj Lamichhane from Trauma Center, Dr. Suraj Thulung from Neuro Bansbari, Dr. Balgopal Karmaacharya from Manipal Medical College Pokhara, Dr. Amit Pradhanang from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, and Dr. Prakash Poudel from Nepal Mediciti, among others.

Nepal Medical College has announced its plan to continue organizing such workshops in the future for the skill development of neurosurgeons and spinal surgeons.
