Free Ambulance in Remote Settlement: A Relief for Pregnant Women

nepal Health News, Sarlahi – On the evening of Baisakh 4 (April 16), Jamuni Bal of Lalbandi Municipality–14 experienced labor pain and was immediately provided with a free ambulance service by the municipal hospital. The hospital dispatched an ambulance to her home, accompanied by health workers, and she was safely brought to the hospital where she gave birth without complications.

After a safe delivery at the hospital, she was again transported home the following day via the ambulance. According to Dr. Chandan Chaudhary, the Medical Superintendent of the Municipal Hospital, 13 women have already benefited from this free ambulance service initiated for pregnant and postpartum women.

The municipality launched this service with the goal of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates. An ambulance was purchased at a cost of NPR 2.1 million to start the service. Pregnant women from any ward of the municipality are eligible for free ambulance rides when going for delivery and also for returning home afterward.

Dr. Chaudhary stated that this service has proven to be highly effective in ensuring safe motherhood by eliminating transportation challenges during the sensitive time of childbirth.

Health professionals have noted that this initiative by Lalbandi Municipality has significantly improved access to healthcare for women in rural areas and has made an important contribution to safe delivery practices.
