Dentists warn to shut down services nationwide if there are no sanctioned posts in basic hospitals

Nepal Health News, Kathmandu – The Nepal Dental Association has begun a phase-wise protest expressing dissatisfaction with the recently introduced "Basic Hospital Operation Standards–2081" by the government.

According to the association, the new standards have ignored the demands of dental professionals. Dentists are particularly discontent because the guidelines do not include provisions for the appointment of dentists and their assistants in hospitals with 5, 10, and 15 beds, which are being constructed at the local level.

Dr. Pranaya Ratna Shakya, President of the Association, stated that dentists across the country are currently wearing black armbands while continuing their duties as a peaceful expression of protest. He warned that if their demands are not addressed, all services except emergency care will be halted. He further added that if the government still remains indifferent, even emergency services may be stopped.

Dr. Bishwaprakash Thakur, General Secretary of the Association, complained that despite continuous dialogue with the government for the past three years, their concerns have not been heard. He stated that the recently introduced standards disregard dental professionals and feel like a betrayal by the government.

According to him, the protest involving black armbands began on Baisakh 28 (May 10, 2025). He warned that if their demands are not fulfilled, they will be compelled to take more severe steps, including nationwide protests and surrounding the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Thakur noted that although there are over 6,000 dentists in Nepal, their representation in government health services is very low. Currently, only about 50 to 60 dentists are working in government-sanctioned positions across the country.

The Association clarified that their demands are aimed at ensuring quality oral healthcare for citizens. The primary goal of the protest, they stated, is to improve public access to health services.
