Nepal Health News, Kathmandu – Prof. Dr. Govinda KC, who has long been active in demanding reforms in the medical education system, is set to begin another round of Satyagraha at Geta Medical College. According to his associate Dr. Amrit Jaisi, he is scheduled to hold a press conference today at 12:30 PM to publicly share his views, followed by the formal commencement of his Satyagraha at 1 PM.
Dr. KC's dissatisfaction stems from a recent decision made during the 21st meeting of the Medical Education Commission, which approved an increase of 1,359 MBBS seats, raising the total to 2,635. Similarly, the number of BDS (Dental) seats has been increased to 625.
According to Dr. KC, increasing the number of seats only in private medical colleges—without expanding capacity in government institutions—is unjust.
He argues that this could compromise the quality of education and indicates a preference for private sector interests. Many experts also suspect that the seat expansion decision was influenced by private medical college operators and their financial motives.
Dr. KC had previously urged the government to reverse this decision. However, after his demand was ignored, he has resorted to launching a new phase of protest through Satyagraha.
In his view, the primary objective of medical education is to produce competent and skilled human resources, which makes ensuring quality education absolutely essential.
